Grotesque, absurd, and razor-sharp in its cultural satire, American Exceptionalism is a striking 2021 work by award-winning director and digital artist Nick DenBoer (aka Smearballs) — a provocative commentary on consumerism, spectacle, and late-stage identity.

Set in a chaotic big-box store aisle, the composition blends hyperreal 3D rendering with exaggerated caricature and unsettling humor. Toilet paper hoarding, firearms, crowns, anatomical props, patriotic imagery, and distorted beauty collide in a scene that feels both surreal and disturbingly familiar. DenBoer’s signature aesthetic — cinematic, technically meticulous, and unapologetically absurd — transforms contemporary anxieties into theatrical digital allegory.

Created during the cultural aftershocks of the pandemic era, the work functions as satire: a reflection on nationalism, excess, panic-buying, and the performance of identity in a hyper-consumer world. The title itself carries layered meaning, referencing both political rhetoric and social mythology, while the image dismantles it with biting irony.

This example is marked “AP” (Artist’s Proof) on the lower margin — a designation typically reserved for a very limited number of prints retained by the artist or gifted outside the standard edition. It is hand-titled and signed by DenBoer.

Although not directly part of the Tommy Lee collaboration series, this print originates from Tommy Lee’s personal collection, acquired alongside the later collaborative works — adding an additional layer of provenance and cross-collectibility.

A compelling example of early-2020s digital surrealism, American Exceptionalism stands as both social critique and pop-cultural artifact — bold, irreverent, and unmistakably of its moment.
