Custer City, originally known as Graves, established its post office on January 22, 1894, in the dugout home of Philip Graves, the first postmaster. The town was later renamed Custer City on September 28, 1904, in honor of Lt. Col. George A. Custer.
During the late 19th century, Custer City was a burgeoning community. The arrival of the Blackwell, Enid and Southwestern Railroad (later the St. Louis and San Francisco Railway) between 1901 and 1903 connected the town to broader markets, facilitating economic growth. The townsite was officially opened for settlement in July 1902 when the Frisco Townsite Company sold lots, attracting settlers and businesses to the area.
This particular image depict Main Street as a hub of activity, with general stores, groceries, and other establishments lining the unpaved roads, frequented by horse-drawn carriages and early automobiles.
The image of Main Street in Custer City, Oklahoma, c. 1890s, represents a profoundly significant and possibly unpublished historical artifact. Its uniqueness lies in capturing an unvarnished moment of daily life in a pioneer settlement during a pivotal era of western expansion. The absence of any identical or similar images in online archives underscores its rarity, suggesting that this view may have been privately held or never disseminated widely.
As an original image created from original vintage glass negative, this limited edition high quality print offers a rare and honest glimpse into the architectural simplicity, economic activity, and early settlement patterns of a frontier town, making it an invaluable resource for historians, archivists, and collectors. Its rarity and detail elevate its historical importance, preserving a fleeting moment of American history that is otherwise scarcely documented. This could be one of the very few surviving images showcasing this specific view, making it a cornerstone artifact for understanding life in 19th-century Oklahoma.
