Behind Iron Bars—Italy’s Historic Camorra & Mafia Trials | Two Original Type I Photographs, Viterbo c. 1911 & Sicily c. 1927

Rows of defendants stare through iron bars. Uniformed Carabinieri stand guard. A witness sits alone in a separate cage. In these two extraordinary courtroom photographs, the struggle between organized crime and state authority becomes a scene of unmistakable human drama.

Offered together are two original Type I gelatin silver photographs documenting distinct chapters in Italy’s confrontation with organized crime: the Cuocolo trial of the Neapolitan Camorra at Viterbo, circa 1911, and the trial of Nicolò Andaloro and 163 others at Termini Imerese, Sicily, circa 1927.

Separated by approximately sixteen years, these images span a profound political transformation—from Italy’s prewar constitutional monarchy to Mussolini’s Fascist dictatorship. Together, they preserve the imposing visual language of the mass criminal trial: barred enclosures, concentrated armed security, and the accused exposed to the scrutiny of officials, spectators, and the press.

Viterbo, circa 1911—The Camorra in the Dock

Photograph #12990 captures the celebrated Cuocolo proceedings, which opened in 1911 and concluded in July 1912. The prosecution arose from the 1906 murders of Gennaro Cuocolo and his wife, Maria Cutinelli, but expanded into a sweeping confrontation with the Camorra and its influence in Naples.

The great courtroom cage dominates the composition. At the right, a smaller enclosure holds Gennaro Abbatemaggio, identified in the handwritten reverse caption—the informer whose accusations became central to the prosecution. Lawyers, defendants, and guards occupy the surrounding space, creating a remarkably detailed record of a trial that attracted international attention.

The government sought a decisive blow against entrenched criminal power. Heavy sentences followed, but the case acquired a troubled legacy: in 1927, Abbatemaggio retracted his accusations, intensifying doubts about the evidence and investigative methods. This photograph preserves a pivotal moment in both the history of the Camorra and the enduring debate over how justice should confront organized crime.

Termini Imerese, circa 1927—The Sicilian Mafia on Trial

Photograph #12991 depicts the courtroom during the proceedings against Nicolò Andaloro and 163 others, held before the Court of Assizes of Termini Imerese from October 4, 1927, to January 11, 1928.

A long barred enclosure rises above a closely stationed line of uniformed guards. The courtroom rail fills the foreground, drawing the viewer into the space while keeping the accused at a formidable distance. The image conveys the scale and intensity of the Sicilian prosecutions during the Fascist government’s campaign against the Mafia.

The Camorra of Naples and the Sicilian Mafia were distinct organizations. Bringing these photographs together allows the collector to examine two different criminal histories—and two different political settings—in which the Italian state made the courtroom a highly visible demonstration of its authority.

Photographs with a Documented Working History

Both prints bear Brown Brothers photographic-agency stamps, recording their handling within the agency’s inventory. The reverse of #12990 carries extensive handwritten identification. Photograph #12991 retains an attached published reproduction of the same image, a handwritten January 28, 1928 publication reference, and editorial crop lines on the photograph itself.

These surviving details add substantial documentary interest. They reveal how the images were captioned, prepared, and circulated, preserving their history as working press photographs alongside the courtroom events they depict.
