Jagger Unleashed: Ecstatic High Note at Madison Square Garden, 1972 – From the Terry Southern Collection. (watermarks do not appear on the actual photograph.)
Peter Beard
35.6 x 27.9 cm
An electrifying live-action portrait of Mick Jagger caught mid-explosion, this powerful black-and-white photograph captures the Rolling Stones’ frontman in full tilt, leaning back in a moment of ecstatic abandon—shirt clinging to his body, fists clenched, mouth open in a primal roar.
Shot during the Stones’ now-legendary July 1972 concert at Madison Square Garden, this 14” x 11” vintage print comes from the Terry Southern Collection, and is believed to be the work of renowned photographer Peter Beard, who along with Truman Capote traveled on the Stones’ tour bus under assignment from Rolling Stone magazine. Southern, covering the tour for Saturday Review, was deeply embedded in the backstage chaos, the onstage electricity, and the cultural revolution the tour embodied.
This image freezes Jagger at his most raw and divine—drenched in sweat, arching toward the crowd like a rock ’n’ roll messiah, backed by the band’s horn section and driven by a force that seems to radiate off the stage. His semi-sheer jumpsuit clings to his body, emphasizing the kinetic beauty of the performance. The frame is alive with movement, tension, and spectacle.
